Welcome to Muskegon County, Michigan

Muskegon County lies on the shores of Lake Michigan. Michigan’s largest river, the Muskegon River, winds through the area forming Muskegon Lake just before entering the big lake.
Early inhabitants included the Ottawa and Potawatomi Indians, and in the 1600’s French fur traders came into the region. The economy changed from trading to lumbering with over 16 lumber mills operating on Lake Muskegon in the 1860’s.
As the area entered the 20th Century, lumbering gave way to industry and the City of Muskegon flourished. It is now a metropolis of about 50,000 on Michigan’s western border with a diverse industrial base and a number of retail shopping centers.
Tourism rounds out this area’s economic base as thousands of visitors come to enjoy the beaches along Lake Michigan or a day at Michigan Adventure, a large water/theme park.
In the 1970's I worked for a local weekly newspaper in the area that served the communities of Spring Lake, Coopersville, Ravenna, and Fruitport.
